Chiefs drop third straight December 13th, 2009 It seems as if the Vaughan Flames might be one of the few teams that have the Mississauga Chiefs number this season. After back-to-back wins on the road in Burlington last week, the Mississauga Chiefs returned home to Iceland Arena today, only to drop a 3-2 decision to the Vaughan Flames in Canadian Women’s Hockey League action. November 29, 2009 Chiefs just managed to squeak by the Burlington Barracudas in their fourth meeting of the season by a score of 2-1. The last two meetings with the Barracudas needed a shootout for the Chiefs to come out on top, however, Sunday’s game the Chiefs managed to hold off the Orange and Blue in the dying seconds to secure the victory and preserve their lead a top the CWHL rankings. Mississauga started the scoring off with a goal mid way through the second period by Lindsay Brown, a rookie from St Francis Xavier University, who fought off a defender to gather up a rebound off a point shot by Shannon Moulson. Angela DiStasi extended the Chiefs lead after a mis-play by the Barracudas goaltender, Erika Vanderveer. The goaltender attempted to play the puck behind the net, but instead played the puck right to an unseen DiStasi who still had to magically put the puck upstairs on her backhand past a sprawling Vanderveer to put the Chiefs ahead 2-0. Burlington battled back scoring a goal past Chiefs goaltender, Sami Jo Small off a redirected point shot. The tides shifted and Burlington carried the play. Mississauga attempted to regroup, however, Burlington scored another goal off another redirected point shot by Barracudas defender Mal Johnston. However, this goal, luckily for the Chiefs, was called back due to a Burlington player in Chief’s goaltender Sami Jo Small’s crease. Burlington pushed the entire third period for a second goal, but was stymied by Mississauga’s defense. Even as the seconds ticked away, the Barracudas continued to pressure, however, to no avail as the Chiefs earned their fourth win of the season versus the Barracudas and their third win by a single goal. Amit Gosai - Mississauga News
The Christmas break couldn’t have come any sooner for the Mississauga Chiefs of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.
On Sunday, the Chiefs dropped their third straight game falling 3-2 to the Brampton Thunder at The Icelands.
Chiefs head coach Bradi Cochrane said her team has one simple problem.
“We’re not playing three periods of hockey,” said Cochrane. “Today, I would say we played only two periods and when you give a team like Brampton a three goal lead, they’re not going to stop.”
After three quick goals by Brampton, Mississauga’s Rebecca Davies got the Chiefs on the board with a power play marker with three minutes remaining in the first.
“We can’t afford to give up those kind of leads in this league, teams will definitely shut us down,” said Cochrane. “At this level, players are just too skilled and they will take advantage.”
Brampton head coach Lori Loftus said the early three goal lead was definitely unexpected.
“Sami Jo (Small) is a fabulous goalie and it’s usual to put three past her quickly like that, so we just knew we had to hold on that lead to be able to complete the game,” said Loftus. “It’s always tough competition against the Chiefs, that’s why it always feels good to come away with a win against them.”
After a scoreless second period, Mississauga’s Angela Di Stasi got the Chiefs back into the game with a power play marker of her own, five minutes into the third.
However, with the goalie pulled and the clock winding down, the one goal difference was as close as the Chiefs came.
Cochrane said her team knows what they have to do; they just need to execute it.
“Right now our consistency is not there,” said Cochrane. “We’re just looking at the big picture now, we can talk about it all we want but if we don’t put it on the ice, nothing is going to happen.”
With the loss, Mississauga drops to 12-6-1 on the season, seven points behind the first place Montreal Stars.
After a much needed Christmas break to recuperate, the Chiefs will return to action in the New Year, when they host the Vaughan Flames on Sunday, Jan. 3 at The Icelands.
Chiefs Fall to Flames Again
Mississauga News - Amit Gossai
The Chiefs dropped yet another decision to Vaughan on Sunday afternoon, losing 3-2 in Canadian Women’s Hockey League action at The Icelands.
"They (Vaughan) really play their A game every time we face them," said Chiefs goaltender Sami Jo Small. "We played them six times this season, so we’ll be looking for revenge the next time we face them."
The two teams have played each other five times this year, with Vaughan coming away with three victories.
Chiefs head coach Bradi Cochrane said it was definitely another tough loss.
"It was a much better game then our last loss to them," said Cochrane. "Their transition is what beat us today; they’re a very quick team."
Mississauga headed into the third down 3-2 after a goal by Chiefs Rebecca Davies with 35 seconds left in the second period, but couldn't make another shot.
Small said Vaughan’s goaltender, Kendra Fisher, was the difference in the game.
"She (Fisher) played for us for a long time and I think she always wants to bring her best game to sort of stick it to us," said Small, a three time Olympian on the Canadian Women’s hockey team. "We just couldn’t beat her; she made some big saves at key times."
Yesterday, the Chiefs skated away with a 4-1 victory over the Flames, but unfortunately that tempo stayed in Vaughan.
"We played really well on Saturday, but we just didn’t bring that energy today," said Cochrane. "Our team needs to know that we have to play a full sixty minutes of hockey…the offensive chances are coming, but we’re just not finishing."
Jenny Brine, one of the many rookies on the Chiefs roster this year, added the other Mississauga goal.
With the loss, Mississauga drops to 12-4-1 on the season, five points behind the first place Montreal Stars.
"We need to up our transition side of the game," said Cochrane. "There are a lot of good goaltenders in this league but we got to get the puck to the net and drive for rebounds regardless."
Next Saturday, Dec. 19, the Chiefs travel to Burlington to battle the Barracudas before returning home on Sunday, Dec. 20 to face the Brampton Thunder.

Chiefs Fall to Flames
Chiefs head coach Bradi Cochrane said it was a tough loss for her team.
“They (Vaughan) came out and took advantage of our mistakes and put the puck in the net when they needed to,” said Cochrane. “We took a lot of shots and we had a lot of rebounds that we didn’t put in.”
The second highest scoring team this season, Mississauga came out flat right from the get-go.
“I felt all around that we didn’t have the consistency that we needed both offensively and defensively,” said Cochrane. “Our passes weren’t on, our forechecks weren’t there, and the game just wasn’t consistent at all.”
Down 2-1 heading into the third, Vaughan defenceman and Mississauga native Michelle Bonello netted her second goal of the game and what would be the game-winning goal with 12 minutes to play.
Mississauga’s Rebecca Davies cut the lead back down to one with three minutes left on the clock but unfortunately that was as close as the Chiefs came, dropping their second decision in the past four.
“It was definitely not one of our best games,” said Chiefs rookie Shannon Moulson. “This team (Vaughan) does not give up easily, we had to put the puck in the net a bit more but it didn’t happen.”
Moulson, who resides in Mississauga, netted the Chiefs’ first goal.
“When we’re (Chiefs) down by one late in the game, we’re pretty confident that we’ll comeback because we’ve done it about two-three times already,” said Moulson. “We’re a team that doesn’t like to lose, but unfortunately it didn’t turn out that way.”
With the loss, Mississauga drops to 11-3-1 on the season, still hanging on to a one-point lead over the Montreal Stars for the top spot.
Of the four losses, both Vaughan and Montreal have two wins each against Mississauga under their belts.
Next up, Mississauga looks for revenge as the team heads to Vaughan next Saturday before returning home for the second part of back-to-back games against the Flames.

Jenner Released from the National Team
excerpt from The Oakville Beaver
Unfortunately for Brianne Jenner, she’ll have to wait at least four more years to realize her Olympic dreams.
The 18-year-old forward was one of two players cut from the Canadian Olympic women’s hockey team’s centralized roster Wednesday in Calgary.
Jenner, an Appleby College grad, was the youngest player at the team’s centralized camp. She delayed her acceptance to Cornell University by a year in order to try out for the team.
Defenceman Jocelyne Larocque of Manitoba was also released Wednesday.
“We thank Brianne and Jocelyne for their hard work and dedication to the national women’s program,” said Team Canada head coach Melody Davidson. “It has been an absolute pleasure working with these players.”
Three more cuts will be made before the end of December, when Team Canada will finalize its 21-player roster for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

Brianne was a National Champion with the Mississauga Chiefs in 2007-2008 and competed with the Chiefs last season, however, has chosen to sign for the remainder of this season with the rival Burlington Barracudas before starting college career next season at Cornell University.
Narrowly escaping defeat
Chiefs Win in Shootout
Mississauga News - Chris Clay
For the third consecutive game for the Mississauga Chiefs of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, it took overtime and a shootout to determine a winner.
The Chiefs, playing on the road this afternoon against the Burlington Barracudas, emerged victorious with a 3-2 shootout win at Appleby Arena. The victory kept the Chiefs atop the CWHL standings and extended the team's lead over the Montreal Stars to three points.
Forward Kristy Zamora opened the scoring for the Chiefs after converting a pass from defenceman Shannon Moulson on a two-on-one. The pass was slightly ahead of Zamora, who dove to tip the shot past the Burlington goalie.
With the team down 2-1, Heather Logan scored on a point shot from Moulson to tie the game 2-2.
Overtime solved nothing and the two teams headed into a shootout. Zamora, Sommer West and Ashley Stephenson all scored in the shootout to give the Chiefs the win.
"We seem to like shootouts," said goalie Sami Jo Small, who made 27 saves in the victory. "We're really happy to get the win, considering we were down at one point. Sommer's hard work and effort all game helped rally us and allowed us to regain our focus. We needed this win to stay on top of the standings."
The Chiefs will travel to Burlington next Sunday for a rematch with the Barracudas at Appleby Arena. Game time is 12:30 p.m.

Shootout Excitement and Defeat
This past weekend had the Mississauga Chiefs do battle against two of the top teams in the Canadian Women's Hockey League. Despite numerous regulars out of the lineup, the CWHL Chiefs still managed to pick up three of the possible four points with a an exciting shootout overtime3-2 win on Saturday evening versus the Burlington Barracudas and a disappointing shootout loss on home ice on Sunday versus the Montreal Stars.
Saturdays game was won with the help of call-ups Jenny Brine, a recent graduate of Harvard University, Kim Houde, a local AA player from the University of Manitoba and young 16 year forward Anissa Gamble of the Midget AA Hornets from New Brunswick. Brine was thrown quickly into action serving as one of two centremen along side veteran Sommer West. Despite the short staff, the Chiefs managed to outplay the Barracudas for the majority of the game, however, Burlington's goaltender Allie Cubberly stole the show, keeping the game close and allowing her team to capitalize on their chances. The Barracudas first shot was a goal on a breakaway nine minutes into the first period. It took until mid way through the second period on a power play for the Chiefs to finally solve Cubberly on a rebound off a shot by Jenny Brine that ricocheted off the cross bar right to an open Jenn Clarke who sailed it into the open net. Minutes later, defenseman Shannon Moulson scored on a rush shooting the puck over the shoulder of the screened Barracudas goaltender. Burlington managed to draw even during the second period and the score was tied 2-2 going into the third. The Chiefs had their chances in the third, but once again Allie Cubberly stood her ground pouncing on every rebound. Overtime solved nothing and a shootout was required. Defenceman Shannon Moulson once again found the back of the twine as did forward Rebecca Davies. With Chiefs goaltender Shelly Payne standing tall for the Chiefs stopping all but one Burlington shooter, Mississauga clinched their first overtime victory of the season.
In Sundays tilt versus the defending Clarkson Cup champions, the Montreal Stars, the Chiefs came out on a high from the previous night's OT victory and jumped ahead quickly on a goal by Kristy Zamora with assists to Amber Bowman and Heather Logan. The second period saw a ton of shots on both sides of the ice and despite the Chiefs serving a total of eight minutes in penalties, Shannon Moulson still managed to find the back of the net to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. The lead didn't last long as Montreal answered back by quickly scoring 2 goals of their own by Stars Lisa-Marie Breton and Noemie Marin respectively. The game remained tied until Heather Logan of the Mississauga Chiefs scored with a mere 11 seconds left in the period to go in the dressing room with a lead, 3-2.
Montreal pressured the Chiefs right out of the gate and managed to score just 29 seconds into the period when the Stars Sabrina Harbec found an opening past a screened Chiefs goaltender, Sami Jo Small. The teams traded great opportunities; however, both goaltenders held their ground. With just over two minutes to play in the game Mississauga's Rebecca Davies was called for roughing leaving the Chiefs fighting for their life against one of the top power plays in the country. With only 1:19 left in the third, Montreal's Lisa Marie Breton parked herself in front of a sprawled Small and she managed to bang home a rebound off a point shot by Annie Guay to claim the lead for the first time in the game. Not giving up hope, the Chiefs coach Bradi Cochrane pulled her goaltender and called a timeout as her team now found themselves on the power play with less than 30 seconds to play. The Chiefs kept their focus and worked well under pressure, throwing everything desperately towards the net. With just 6 seconds left in the game, Jenn Clarke slid a rebound past goaltender Jenny Lavigne sending the home crowd into a frenzy and sending the game into overtime.
Once again, for the second time in the weekend, a five minute penalty solved nothing, however, unlike the previous night; Mississauga couldn't solve the Stars goaltender Jenny Lavigne and the Chiefs had to settle for just one point in the overtime loss.

Chiefs Win Two in Ottawa
The CWHL’s Mississauga Chiefs won two games this past weekend in Ottawa to stay on top of the CWHL league standings. The first game was played on Saturday at Carlton University in front of largely pro-Mississauga crowd. The Chiefs took an early lead on a controversial goal off Sommer West’s foot and held the 1-0 lead thanks to some solid penalty killing and defensive zone play. Mississauga came on strong in the second and third periods keeping the majority of the play in the Senators end, however, only managed to squeeze one more goal past goaltender Cassandra McNichol who stood tall against Mississauga’s swarming offence. Rebecca Davies scored the game clincher as she managed to pounce on a rebound off a shot by the Chiefs Sommer West and sale it past the goaltender. The Chiefs goaltender Sami Jo Small earned her second shutout of the season.
The second game in the matchup was played on Sunday and despite a late third period rally, the Chiefs held on for a 4-2 win against the Ottawa Senators. Ashley Stephenson started off the Chiefs momentum early finding Chief Kristi Zamora alone at the side of the net. Stephenson’s slap shot from the point was nicely redirected by Zamora into the empty net for a Mississauga lead mid way through the first period. The game remained tight thanks to numerous timely saves by Senators goaltender Robyn Rittmaster who stopped numerous odd man attacks and breakaways to keep the game close. The game was still 1-0 going into the third period until Jennifer Clarke finally solved Rittmaster for the Chiefs second of the game. The Senators, coached by former NHL’er Brad Marsh, were not about to give up as they attacked the chiefs goaltender Shelly Payne finally scoring their first mid way through the third period to bring the game to within one. Under attack, the Chiefs valiantly tried to hold on as the Senators gained momentum. With less than five minutes left in the game, Ottawa’s Christin Powers raced down the right wing. She wound up for a shot just inside the circles and was completely blocked by Mississauga’s defenseman Ashley Stephenson. Unfortunately, Ashley went down on the play and had to be taken to hospital with an ankle injury, even more unfortunate; the Senators picked up the loose puck and slid it past goaltender Payne to tie the score. With their star defenseman gone, the Chiefs attempted to hold back the momentum by the Senators. With 2:31 left in the third, the Senators were called for roughing. On the ensuing power play, Mississauga native Shannon Moulson bullet shot from the point found its way past a screened Rittmaster for the game winner. Rebecca Davies assured the win with an empty net goal and solidified the Mississauga Chiefs atop the CWHL standings.

Chiefs Win Three in a Row
The Chiefs rallied from last weekend’s loss to Flames to post a 4-1 win to start off the weekend on a positive note. Led by rookie Mel Guillemette who single handedly created the game winning goal on a aggressive forecheck, the Chiefs were able to bounce back from last week’s disappointing loss. Much sturdier goaltending this week by goaltender Sami Jo Small came in handy as the Chiefs were forced once again to kill off numerous penalties, finding themselves in the box for nearly 20 minutes of the game. Despite this, Mississauga kept the Flames at bay diving in front of shots and clearing out rebounds. Mississauga took a 3-0 lead until mid way through the third when Sam Shirley of the Flames out maneuvered the goaltender to bring the Flames within two. Less than two minutes later, with the Flames pushing aggressively for a comeback, Rebecca Davies sealed the win with a wrist shot short side for the victory.
The second period was certainly busy. Penalties on both teams kept the referee busy as tempers flared. The Chiefs served more than ten minutes in penalties and the Flames were able to capitalize on their opportunities taking the lead to 2-1, however, Mississauga did not go down quietly. While Heather Logan was serving two minutes for hi-sticking, Shannon Moulson scored shorthanded thanks to the hard forechecking of Kristy Zamora.
Mississauga continued their penalty woes in the third serving a total of 14 minutes. Exactly one second after Rebecca Davies finished serving her penalty for hi sticking, Vaughan widened the lead to 4 - 2 and kept pressuring the Chiefs. Mississauga did not give up as Angela Di Stasi scored with the assist from Jenn Clarke bringing the team within one. Vaughan kept the fire burning by blazing across the ice and keeping the puck in the Chief's zone. Time out was called by Vaughan to further strategize their game and to Mississauga's disappointment, Vaughan scored on an empty net with 26 seconds left in the period. The Chiefs lost their first home game of the season by a score of 5 - 3.

October 18th vs Burlington
5-3 win
Mississauga played a high energy first period that saw them have more shots on goal, but Burlington managed to draw first blood by scoring on the Chiefs mid-way through the period on a misplay by Chiefs goaltender Sami Jo Small behind the net. However, before the period ended, the Chiefs came back and tied the score on a nifty backhand goal scored by #22 Heather Logan.
Mississauga came out firing in the second period scoring three quick goals to take the lead with goals by Sommer West, a beautiful top shelf shot by Angela Di Stasi and a two on one conversion by Laura Watt from Sommer West. The final period was back and forth and despite some hard hits and aggressive play there were no penalties called. The only goal scored in the third was by the Chiefs #7 Mel Guiellemette to ensure the Mississauga Chiefs the victory with a 5-3 win in their second home game.
October 11th vs Ottawa

period with a flurry of activity. Mississauga couldn't get the puck out and eventually the puck on Annie Guay's stick with secondsThe Mississauga Chiefs went into the weekend with a much-changed roster and a rookie head coach looking to defeat the defending Clarkson Cup Champions, the Montreal Stars. The Chiefs without Jennifer Botterill and Brianne Jenner from last year's roster who are currently centralized with Team Canada and longtime National Team member and Mississauga product Cheryl Pounder who is currently pregnant with her second child, looked to populate their roster with fresh faces looking to make an immediate impact on the CWHL. Rookie head coach Bradi Cochrane took her team for the opening weekend straight into the fire on the road into Montreal attempting to start the season off on a high note.
Game one saw the Chiefs take a 1-0 lead after the first period despite playing the majority of the period short-handed. The lead was short-lived as the Stars quickly jumped on the board with two goals in the second by two Montreal Stars standouts and former National Team members, Annie Guay and Sabrina Harbec. The Chiefs rallied late in the third with a tallie while Chiefs goaltender Sami Jo Small had skated to the bench, during a penalty call, in place of an extra attacker. Amber Bowman managed to squeeze it by Stars goaltender, Jenny Lavigne and the Chiefs looked headed to overtime, but the defending Clarkson Cup Champions didn't let up and continued to press late into the ticking away. She fired it at the net and despite the Chiefs best efforts the Stars captain, Lisa-Marie Breton banged home the rebound with just 3 seconds left on the clock. A tough loss for the Mississauga side.
October 4 vs Montreal
3-0 win
Game Two saw Bradi Cochrane masterfully rebound her team despite the tough late seconds loss from the evening before. Specialty teams were key in game two as the Chiefs managed to score while on the powerplay and managed to kill off the onslaught on penalties called against the Chiefs. Captain Sommer West led the team by numerous times throwing her body in front of the Stars shots nearly breaking her hand in the process. Mississauga picked up their defensive play allowing goaltender Sami Jo Small to control shots and earn the shutout victory. Goals were scored by veteran Chiefs Rebecca Davies and Kristi Zamora as well as new-comer Mel Guillemette a product of the NCAA's Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute and North Bay native who scored her first CWHL goal to secure the Chiefs first victory and a 3-0 win.

The Chiefs went up 4-0 after the first period, thanks to goals by Kristi Zamora and Sommer West and managed to fend off the Chinese for the victory.
